Income inequality reaches record high in Q1 2025

The latest data from Statistics Canada reveal that the gap between the highest—and lowest-income households reached a record high in the first quarter of 2025. The gap in disposable income between the top 40% of households in the income distribution and those in the bottom 40% reached 49 percentage points. The highest income households gained from investments, while the lowest income households' wages declined. The income gap has increased each year following the COVID-19 pandemic, with a low of 43.8 percentage points recorded in the first quarter of 2021.
