How many electric car charging stations are in Canada?

Canada’s automobile infrastructure is built for the gas engine. Fueling stations are easily accessible and conveniently located along regularly used roadways, and integrated into rest stops along major highways. The same cannot be said for electric vehicle (EV) refueling or charging stations, which have been a limiting factor in convincing Canadians to make the switch to EVs. But this is changing. As more Canadian consumers consider transitioning to electric vehicles, the Canadian government is working with the private sector to build the infrastructure required to ease the shift.

One of the key pieces is having an easily accessible network of charging stations. Canada currently has 14,469 publicly accessible electric vehicle charging stations with a total of 38,808 charging ports.

They are located mainly in major urban centres and suburbs, highway rest stops, and shopping centres. While most of these are open to the public, some, like those found at hotels and car dealerships, are open only to patrons.

Quebec has been the leader in electric car adoption within Canada. As of October 1, 2025, there were 440,488 electric vehicles registered in the province, about 74% more than the total EVs registered in second-place Ontario. So, it is surprising that Quebec has the most robust network of charging stations. As of October 1, 2025, over one-third (5,013) of all the electric charging stations in Canada were located in Quebec. Ontario had 4,516 EV charging stations, placing it in second, followed by British Columbia.

While Quebec may have the most public electric vehicle charging locations, it doesn’t have the most charging ports. That distinction belongs to Ontario, which has 12,382 charging ports compared to Quebec’s 12,236. Meanwhile, British Columbia has the third most.

On February 10, 2026, the federal government announced a slew of new investments aimed at helping Canadians select electric vehicles, including $84.4 million earmarked for 122 projects to install more than 8,000 new electric vehicle charging stations across the country. This is the latest in a series of investments the government has made over the past decade. Since 2016, the Canadian government has invested more than $1.2 billion in funding to support the deployment of electric vehicle chargers and hydrogen refuelling stations across the country. Of the 38,000-plus EV chargers, more than 30,000 were partially funded through the government’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, and 1,088 were installed and funded through the Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative.
