More Canadians opting for zero-emission vehicles
Released: Friday, August 8, 2025
More Canadians are opting for greener options when shopping for a new car, continuing a trend that began in 2017. Zero-emission vehicles, or ZEVs, which include plug-in electric hybrids (PHEVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), increased their share of new vehicle sales in Canada in 2024, reaching a record-high 271,228 units, representing 14.6% of total new car registrations, a metric used as a proxy for new vehicle sales. Tesla dominates the Canadian battery-electric vehicle market. Of the 202,333 BEVs sold in Canada in 2024, just over one-fifth were either Tesla Model Y (29,354) or the Model 3 (13,799). Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Outlander is the most popular PHEV model.
