Canada’s population increases but growth rate slows down
Released: Friday, September 26, 2025
Canada’s population is increasing, but the rate of growth is slowing. Canada's population is estimated to have reached 41,651,653 as of July 1, 2025, based on the latest data from Statistics Canada. That represents an increase of 47,098 people or 0.1% from April 1. It’s the slowest increase in a second quarter since the second quarter of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic basically halted migration globally. Except for 2020, it was the slowest growth rate in a second quarter since 1946, the furthest back this data is available. Canada’s population is getting older, so it needs more people to grow its economy and support social programs. The country relies primarily on immigration to fuel population increases, as its birth rate, like many industrialized nations, are declining.
Data for the above chart comes from Statistics Canada Table 17-10-0009-01 Population estimates, quarterly.
