Forests are important ecosystems home to countless species of plants and animals. They play an integral part in cleaning the air, filtering contaminants in waterways, and providing critical resources like metals, stone, and lumber, all of which are necessary for modern life. Forests are present on every continent except Antarctica and present in all but four countries. Some, like the Amazon Rainforest in South America and the Boreal Forest in Canada, cover vast expanses of territory, while in other countries there may be little or none.

Which country has the largest area of land covered by forests?

According to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Russia has the largest area of forested land at 8,153,120 square kilometres. Brazil comes in second with 4,929,788 square kilometres of forest. Rounding out the top five are Canada, the United States, and China with 3,468,172, 3,097,950, and 2,256,169 square kilometres of forested land, respectively.

Meanwhile, Qatar, Nauru, Monaco, and the Vatican have no forests, making them the countries with the smallest area of forested land.

Which country has the highest share of land covered by forests?

Four countries — Suriname, Gabon, Palau, and Solomon Islands have more than 90% of their landmass covered by forests. A total of 45 countries have forest covering at least half of their total land area. At the other end of the spectrum, 44 countries have less than 10% of their land area covered in forest.
