What are the most commonly spoken languages in Canada other than English and French?
Canada is a diverse country, and this is reflected in the number of different languages spoken by Canadians. Data from the 2021 Census of Population reveal that in 2021, 98% of Canadians could speak English or French, Canada’s two official languages, and about 3 in 10 Canadians, or 10.7 million, reported speaking a language other than one of the official languages. Spanish was the non-official language spoken by most people (1,171,000), followed by Mandarin (987,000), Punjabi (942,000), and Arabic (838,000).
The proportion of Canadians able to converse in a language other than English or French rose from 21.8% in 2001 to 29.5% in 2021, coinciding with the rise in the number of immigrants living in Canada.
