How does crime compare between Canada and the United States?

A report recently released by Statistics Canada, entitled “Regional variations in police-reported crime: Comparing Canada and the United States” reveals that in 2023, Canada had fewer violent crimes (252 per 100,000 people) than the United States (334 per 100,000), but recorded more property crimes (1,990 per 100,000) than the U.S. (1,906 per 100,000). Among violent crimes, the murder rate in the United States was more than three times that of Canada, while the rate of major assaults was 30% higher in America when compared to Canada. When comparing property crimes, Canada had higher rates of break-ins and theft, and lower rates of motor vehicle theft.

In 2023, Statistics Canada reported that 5.3 million Canadians—about 3 in 10 employees—were covered by collective bargaining agreements. Of which 76.7% of public sector employees were unionized compared to 15.5% of employees in the private sector.
