Canadian household spending climbs higher in 2023

Canadian household spending climbed higher in 2023. That year, Canadian households spent an average of $76,750 on goods and services in 2023, up 14.3% from 2021. According to Statistics Canada, the rise in spending was partly due to consumer inflation as the Consumer Price Index increased by 10.9% from 2021 to 2023.

The three largest spending categories — shelter, transportation, and food — accounted for 63.6% of total household spending. On average, Canadian households spent $24,671 on shelter, $12,090 on transportation, and $12,046 on food. These three categories account for 32.1%, 15.8%, and 15.7% of total household consumption of goods and services in 2023.

Among the provinces, households in Alberta reported the highest average spending at $88,186. In contrast, households in New Brunswick reported the lowest average expenditures at $64,227.
